Gavin Edmonds' Lecture:
Dialogues with Memory

Gavin Edmonds' lecture made me realize that art creation can be a way of having a dialogue with memory. The concept of "Nachträglichkeit" (deferred action) he mentioned struck me deeply—those seemingly past or even forgotten experiences can suddenly resurface in different contexts, quietly seeping into the creative process. This sense of uncertainty and the fluidity of time resonates with my own practice, where inspiration often hits me unexpectedly in fleeting moments.
His analysis of how artists like Martin Kippenberger address personal and historical trauma in their work felt particularly honest and relatable. Creation, as he framed it, isn’t about solving problems but about making them visible and felt. I was also intrigued by his use of plaster panels and video screens—his cross-media exploration appears simple but carries a strong impact.
After listening to his lecture, I began to wonder if I could take a more proactive approach to uncover hidden emotions and memories in my own work. By presenting these blurred, incomplete fragments more directly, I want to create an experience where the audience doesn’t just see the imagery but feels the unsaid, the unspoken depths beneath it.
