Helen Maurer’s Workshop

Using Light as a Medium

Helen Maurer’s workshop was an unforgettable experience that reshaped my understanding of artistic creation. She began with a calming meditation session, setting a reflective and open tone for the activities. Focusing on collaboration and hands-on exploration, the workshop invited us to engage with light, space, and sound in entirely new ways.

One of the highlights was a drawing game in pairs, where one person gave verbal instructions while the other drew. This activity, rooted in language and intuition, showed me that creation doesn’t always rely on vision—interaction alone can spark unique results. Another fascinating exercise involved drawing on film slides and projecting them onto walls. The way light magnified the intricate textures of the pen strokes, transforming them into dimensional and dynamic visuals, felt almost magical, as if a microcosm had expanded into a universe.

Helen introduced tools like convex mirrors and transparent colored papers, allowing us to combine them with light to create layered, ephemeral projections. For the first time, I realized that light and material interaction could be a core creative language, not just an auxiliary tool. This exploration demonstrated how space, materials, and light can converge to form cohesive and immersive artworks.

Beyond the visual, Helen encouraged us to engage other senses through sound and touch. Experimenting with the textures and sounds of various objects deepened the experience, reminding me that art isn’t solely visual—it’s about a full-bodied, sensory engagement.

Helen’s workshop showed me that art can be both playful and deeply meaningful. Her experimental approach taught me that creation doesn’t always need a clear goal—it’s about discovering the potential of materials and space. This experience has inspired me to integrate these explorations into my own practice and uncover unexpected possibilities.
